Every year, Indian weddings pause for Chaturmas, the four months when Lord Vishnu is believed to rest. This year that pause runs until Dev Uthani Ekadashi on 20 November. Then, from 16 December, Kharmas closes the calendar again until mid-January.

That leaves a very narrow gap. By the New Delhi panchang, there are just eleven shubh vivah dates left in 2026: 21, 24, 25 and 26 November, then 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 11 and 12 December. Wedding calendars count only around 52 auspicious dates across the whole of 2026, compared to roughly 96 in 2027.

Fewer dates doesn't mean fewer weddings. It means the same weddings squeezed into three and a half weeks. Caterers, decorators, hotels and gift vendors will all be juggling several events on the same night. The things that get left to the last minute, like return gifts and guest room kits, are the ones most likely to go wrong.

Two gifts, two different jobs

Most families think about return gifts and forget there's a second moment that matters just as much.

The guest room kit

Wedding planners usually suggest the same basics: water, a local snack, the schedule of events, a welcome note, and personal care items. That last part is where bamboo fits. Swap the hotel's plastic toothbrush and flimsy comb for something guests will actually take home.

The return gift, by budget

Most families spend somewhere between ₹300 and ₹1,200 per return gift, with a little more for close family. Here's how our range fits into that.

Counting back from your wedding date

With so few dates, work backwards from the big day rather than forwards from today. This is what we'd suggest to any family we work with.

1. 6 weeks before: lock the numbersFinal guest count, how many rooms you're booking, and a per-gift budget for each group: family, friends, kids, VIPs.
2. 4 to 5 weeks before: place custom ordersAnything with the couple's names, a monogram or custom packaging needs this buffer. In the festive rush, earlier is safer.
3. 2 weeks before: order extrasAdd 5 to 10% more than your count. Surprise guests, a damaged box or a last-minute plus-one always turn up.
4. 3 days before: pack the room kitsHand them to the hotel with a room list, so they're on the beds before check-in.

Wrap it the way your nani would

A plastic-free gift in a plastic box misses the point. Cloth potlis, jute pouches and kraft boxes all look richer in photos than shiny wrap, and guests reuse them. Add a small handwritten tag with both your names and the date. It costs almost nothing and it's often what people keep.
